Chapter Five

Jonas sat up, instantly awake and in a sheen of sweat. That’s how the nightmares always ended, with him clawing his way to the surface of reality. He could hear his own heartbeat in his ears like the sound of hoof beats galloping against his chest. Each breath he drew in was like drawing air into his starving lungs. He hated reliving his past, wished he could forget the incident that haunted him. If he was back home he’d of gone off into the wild and found his calm again. But he was here in the city, and the walls were closing in around him. He felt movement behind him and sighed when Nadia’s arms around his shoulders. Her touch soothed him somewhat, but he doubted anything could erase the memories that plagued his mind.

“You don’t have to do this alone,” she said quietly, and pressed a kiss against his neck. “Third time in two days you’ve woken up. Sometimes you call out in your sleep.”

“I thought that was only in my mind, I thought I didn’t wake you,” he said.

“I’m a light sleeper. I didn’t want to intrude when you leave the room,” Nadia admitted. “I was up each time, but that’s what you do when you care about someone.”

He covered her hand on his chest with his own. “I’m glad you care.”

“Jonas, if you haven’t figured it out by now, I more than care,” she said huskily. Her admission warmed and scared him all at the same time.

“You don’t know that much about me to make that decision,” he said quietly.

“Tell me, Jonas,” Nadia implored. “I don’t think there’s anything that could change my mind about you.”

“I can’t.” He shook his head. “It’s...”

“I get it, you like being to be a martyr onto yourself,” Nadia said stiffly. “You know, being damaged like a freaking teenage vampire heartthrob is what every woman wants.”

“It’s nothing like that...”

“Don’t worry about it, Jonas.” Nadia moved away, and he felt the chill of her words.

“Nadia...my past is complicated.” Jonas turned to look her. She was lying on the bed, facing away from him.

“Understood, complicated life,” she said. “I’m going to sleep. If you’re going to be up, could you possibly go into the living room and meditate or something? That seems to calm you more than I ever could. Good to fuck, not to confide in, I get it.”

It didn’t take a genius to know that she meant conversation over and get away from me. Jonas sighed and moved off the bed to find his sleep pants. He walked into the living room and went to the windows that overlooked the New York skyline. It was a beautiful scene, the ink black sky in the background with the buildings lit up at night.

He could see the river just beyond the buildings, and there were no stars in the sky. The thing was, he didn’t miss them like he thought he would in the city. He loved the ranch, loved Texas, but there were so many memories there, things that haunted him.
